Best of the Bay 2008: Brandon Dunlap
Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay
The winners come in two varieties: those selected in the Readers’ Poll, and those chosen by writers and editors. Readers voted online in record numbers this year.
critics' pick
BEST IN WEARABLE ART: (tie) Brandon Dunlap & Ivanka Ska, Frank Strunk III
Over the past few years, the Bay area has seen an abundance of artsy fashion shows -- particularly those that blend music with visual art exhibits and apparel, and those proudly proclaiming a do-it-yourself or recycled aesthetic. The Ybor-based Dirty But Sophisticated show, the fourth installment, featured an even bigger runway set up in a space that could accommodate upwards of 800 people; before and after parties at the DFAC; live music by Bradenton band Have Gun, Will Travel; drag queen Natasha as emcee; and nine talented artist-designers exhibited their outrageous creations. Making a significant appearance this year was artist Brandon Dunlap and designer Ivanka Ska. Her dresses paired with his distinctive, multi-layered silkscreens? The perfect match, and the 2008 Best in Wearable Art.

Enspirati Artist Anne Kavanagh exhibits art for the Universal Music Day
Anne Kavanagh will exhibit 5 of her music paintings in conjunction with the second annual Universal Music Day. Just as Earth Day has created awareness for the importance of caring for the Earth; Universal Music Day creates awareness for the importance of Sound, Silence and Vibration--known as Music.
A fitting exhibit for Anne seeing as how when you walk through the doors of Teasdale Worldwide, chances are you will be greeted by hearty music lilting throughout the comfortable welcoming room, and a smiling salutation from a lady decked out in a painters apron, up to her elbows in the colors concocting her latest creation. Anne Kavanagh, in her role as Ambassador of Ambiance, welcomes guests and stirs up the creativity from the first step through doors often painting the very music one may be hearing.
To meet with the artists and creators of "Essence of Essential", a reception will be held Friday, September 12th at the Octagon Arts Center located in the Unitarian Universalist Church at 2470 Nursery Rd. from 7-9 pm.
The exhibit will be on display through October 11th, 2008.

Joan Willies was featured in the March/April 08 issue of Dollhouse Miniatures magazine.
A 13 page spread highlights pictures of Joan’s finely detailed collector dollhouse paintings, produced in 1/12th scale. The article also includes the history, technique and step-by-step instruction on the art of painting in miniature form. Joan, originally from the United Kingdom, is a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters.
The technique of painting in miniature form began more than a thousand years ago. Because few people could read, these very detailed paintings were incorporated into the text of documents and books; eventually the technique was applied to portraits. Because the work was small enough to be carried by messengers, the paintings were often commissioned by royalty as a means of introducing an eligible son or daughter for betrothal.
Concerned with preserving the technique, Joan promotes the exacting standards of the 100 year old Royal Miniature Society by giving demonstrations and lectures, appearing on television and writing literature on the subject. |

Joan has been painting and studying Miniatures since she was eleven, and is a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers of London, England. (see full bio) |

G.A.M.E.’s First Exhibit Raises Thousands of Dollars for Mayor’s Arts Education Fund
Proceeds from “A Tapestry for Life” display at Tampa International Airport surpassed expectations
(January 24, 2008 – Tampa, FL) Global Arts Movement for Education, an innovative non-profit organization dedicated to funding arts scholarships and providing resources for emerging artists, generated thousands of dollars in proceeds to benefit Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio’s Arts Education Fund. “A Tapestry of Life through Art”, G.A.M.E.’s inaugural exhibit comprised of artwork by three diverse local artists, displayed at Tampa International Airport from July 2007 through January 2008.
In such a brief period of time, stunning masterpieces by Chinese artist Ping Chen, Peruvian artist Patty Filomeno Hunter and American artist Anne Kavanagh generated a buzz that led to over a quarter of the paintings being sold to art enthusiasts, visitors and guests of T.I.A. Additionally, The Unsinkable Molly Brown Foundation, Inc. matched $1 for every dollar raised on behalf of G.A.M.E., doubling the total contributed in educational funds for Hillsborough County schools.
The success of “A Tapestry of Life” put G.A.M.E. on the map; the world of business and art is already taking notice. G.A.M.E. has many exciting initiatives in the works for the upcoming year. G.A.M.E.’s current “Front and Centre” exhibit, on display at the Centre Club, will benefit the funding of scholarships for the Self Employment in the Arts Conference at the University of Tampa.
